January 14: “Medical and ethical fact-checking of gender therapies”
Kevin Powell MD PhD is a retired pediatrician and clinical ethics consultant. He worked as both an office pediatrician and as a hospitalist, most recently at Cardinal Glennon. He has chaired ethics committees and served as a clinical ethics consultant for over 15 years. He continues to write about medical professionalism, ethics, and law.
The medical associations and governments of many other liberal democracies have walked back the trend in treating gender dysphoria that US clinics have continued to promoted since 2012. The current science and ethics are imperfect but informative for understanding the conflict in Jefferson City and other state legislatures.
January 21 & 28: “Prophets, Saints, and Martyrs: Latin American Liberation Theology”
Speaker: Dr. Clint McCann Evangelical Professor of Biblical Interpretation, Eden Seminary
Dr. McCann’s primary interest is the complementary nature of faith and reason (a.k.a. science and religion) in the pursuit of truth. He values freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and the “simul justus et peccator” tradition of Lutheranism that eschews liberation theology. The sessions on January 21st and 28th will consider the emergence of Latin American theology, with a focus on martyrs and leaders of the church of El Salvador.
